Local Area Info - North London

The leafy villages of North London are a refreshing change from the hectic hustle of The City but it’s by no means boring so why not explore what the area has to offer.

If you venture to this part of the capital you will probably find that Islington will be your main port of call. Not only is it close to the attractions of central London but it also has quite few of its own. There are museums and other historic attractions and as you walk around the streets you will still see remnants of Islington’s rich past in the Georgian streets and squares. In fact Henry VIII used to own houses in the area and many of the large Victorian Terraces still remain.

But this upmarket suburban area seems more focused on the now, and much of what there is to love about Islington comes in the form of bars and restaurants. However there are still some worthwhile attractions to keep you entertained when you’re not hungry or thirsty. A few examples are the Estorick Collection of Modern Art, the Almeida Theatre and antiques shopping in Camden Passage Market.

The other main draw of North London are the attractions of Highgate. For those who like quiet walks, you can venture into the ancient Highgate Woods, for those interested in the arts there’s Lauderdale House and if you like history then there’s plenty here to interest you.

If you’re interested in going further afield you can explore what’s on at Alexandra Palace. Once lauded as ‘the People’s Palace’, today this superb example of Victorian splendour hosts a number of trade shows and events. Visitors can also make the most of the extensive gardens and sports facilities including the ice staking rink and the pitch and putt golf course.

Other areas of North London include Highbury, Finsbury Park, Palmers Green, Tottenham, Stamford Hill, Wheatstone, Wood Green and Muswell Hill amongst others and there are other variety of attractions and distractions with an ‘N’ postcode.
